Afghanistan announced on Sunday that it had eliminated 58 Pakistani soldiers in border operations overnight, citing repeated violations of its airspace and territory. The recent tensions escalated when Afghan authorities accused Pakistan of launching attacks in Kabul and an eastern market without claiming responsibility.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Taliban government, reported that Afghan forces had seized 25 Pakistani army posts, resulting in 58 fatalities and 30 injuries among Pakistani soldiers. Mujahid assured that Afghanistan had control over its borders, curbing illicit activities. There was no immediate response from Pakistan regarding the casualties.
Pakistan has previously targeted alleged militant hideouts within Afghanistan, mostly in remote mountainous regions, leading to periodic border skirmishes. The recent clashes signify escalating tensions between the two nations.
The Afghan Defense Ministry confirmed successful retaliatory actions along the border and warned of a robust response if territorial integrity violations persist. Notably, the Torkham border crossing, a crucial trade route between the countries, remained closed on Sunday, affecting movement and trade activities.
The deteriorating security situation prompted the closure of the Chaman crossing in southwest Pakistan, barring entry for individuals, including Afghan refugees. Reports of explosions and military activities near Spin Boldak in Kandahar were witnessed, indicating the intensity of the conflict.
Regional powers have urged for calm amidst the escalating tensions. Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of harboring Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan members, which Islamabad claims conduct attacks within its borders. The conflict could have broader implications given the historical tensions between India and Pakistan, as well as India’s growing ties with Afghanistan.
Saudi Arabia has emphasized the need for dialogue and restraint to de-escalate tensions and maintain regional stability. The recent clashes have raised concerns about the potential for further conflict and instability in the region.
