Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed her concerns over Canada losing its measles elimination status, acknowledging the challenges in controlling the highly contagious disease due to unrestricted travel between provinces and internationally. Smith emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent the spread of measles and highlighted the government’s transparency in reporting outbreaks and cases on their website.

While several provinces have reported measles infections this year, Alberta and Ontario have recorded the highest number of cases. Alberta has seen nearly 2,000 cases since March, with over 150 hospitalizations and one reported death of an infant due to measles contracted during pregnancy. The Pan American Health Organization recently revoked Canada’s measles elimination status after cases of the same strain circulated for over a year, necessitating a year without transmission to regain the status.

Smith credited the success of Alberta’s vaccine campaign in slowing the outbreak, particularly in communities with lower vaccination rates like Mennonite and Hutterite communities. The province targeted these areas with vaccination efforts, resulting in a significant increase in uptake rates. Smith emphasized the importance of vaccines in preventing the devastating impacts of measles, especially on young children.

Opposition NDP health critic Sarah Hoffman criticized the government for not appointing a permanent chief medical officer of health, highlighting the need for effective communication and awareness on public health issues like tuberculosis, in addition to measles and COVID-19 immunizations. Hoffman underscored the government’s responsibility to provide information and support for individuals seeking vaccination.

The absence of a permanent chief medical officer of health in Alberta since 2022 has raised concerns about public health leadership, with calls for immediate action to address the issue and enhance public health efforts across the province.
