Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand’s visit to Greenland to inaugurate a new Canadian consulate has been delayed due to adverse weather conditions in the area. Anand was scheduled to open the consulate this week as both nations aim to strengthen their ties amidst uncertain relations with the U.S.

The commitment to establish the diplomatic office, along with another consulate in Anchorage, Alaska, was initially outlined in the federal government’s Arctic foreign policy unveiled late last year. Greenland’s government supported this initiative in its own policy document in early 2024 and is looking forward to reciprocating with an office in Ottawa.

Describing the move as groundbreaking in expanding Canada’s Arctic presence, Anand expressed, “We are diligently working to ensure that we fulfill our role as a significant Arctic nation during a time of geopolitical volatility.”

A new date for the trip has not been set yet. Anand’s visit was to follow other high-ranking foreign officials’ trips to Greenland this year. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized solidarity and friendship during his visit in June, while Vice-President JD Vance criticized Denmark’s safety measures in Greenland during his time at a U.S. military base on the island.

In response to Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland, Anand highlighted Canada’s efforts on the global stage to advance Arctic protection and security, reassuring Greenland of Canada’s reliability as a cooperative partner.

Canada and Denmark, both NATO allies, maintain embassies in each other’s capitals. The Greenlandic government, a self-governing territory under Denmark’s Kingdom, seeks more autonomy in foreign affairs.

Canada has not sent a high-level minister to Greenland in years. Virginia Mearns, Canada’s new Arctic ambassador, was set to accompany Anand on the trip. Analysts suggest that this diplomatic move could pave the way for deeper collaboration on Arctic security, including initiatives involving patrol aircraft and coast guard operations with Greenland and Denmark.

Canada will be among a select few countries with official consulates in Nuuk, alongside the United States and Iceland, with the latter sharing office space with the Canadian consulate. Details regarding the Canadian staff in Greenland and the appointment of a consular general are expected to be announced later.
