Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, successfully launched its giant New Glenn rocket from Florida on a significant mission for paying customers. The rocket carried two NASA satellites destined for Mars and achieved a successful landing of its reusable booster for the first time.

The New Glenn rocket, a powerful two-stage vehicle, took off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, marking Blue Origin’s first mission since the debut launch of the New Glenn vehicle, NG-1, in January 2025. This launch represented a milestone for Blue Origin as it delivered its first science payload for NASA, positioning the company to compete more effectively with SpaceX, led by Elon Musk.

Following several days of delays due to unfavorable weather conditions, the rocket ascended into the sky with its seven BE-4 liquid-fuelled engines. About 10 minutes after liftoff, the New Glenn booster successfully landed on a barge in the Atlantic Ocean, showcasing Blue Origin’s commitment to reusability.

The mission, named “Never Tell Me the Odds,” elicited cheers at Blue Origin’s mission control center as the booster landed. The upper stage of the rocket then deployed NASA’s twin EscaPADE spacecraft into space for a 22-month journey to Mars.

Arianne Cornell, a vice president at Blue Origin, described the launch as the dawn of a new era for the company. The NASA satellites, Blue and Gold, will conduct a study on Mars’ space weather environment upon reaching the planet in 2027.

In addition to the primary mission, the rocket also carried a secondary payload from Viasat for a technical demonstration of in-space communications. Blue Origin has invested significantly in developing the New Glenn rocket to serve as a reliable vehicle for space missions, catering to both crewed and cargo missions.

Despite its achievements, Blue Origin faces stiff competition from SpaceX, which has a robust track record in rocket launches. SpaceX is advancing its Starship rocket, aiming for full reusability and a wide range of missions, including interplanetary travel to the moon and Mars.

Blue Origin has also been involved in supplying rocket engines for other companies and collaborating on projects like a crewed moon lander for NASA’s Artemis program. The company continues to innovate and expand its capabilities to catch up with industry leaders like SpaceX.
