A recent discovery sheds light on the invisible universe that makes up the majority of our cosmos. Dark energy and dark matter constitute about 95% of the universe, with dark energy driving the universe’s expansion and dark matter holding galaxies together.

Astronomers have long been intrigued by the invisible nature of dark matter and dark energy, only observing their effects on surrounding objects like galaxies. Notably, Fritz Zwicky and Vera Rubin proposed the existence of dark matter in the 1930s and 1970s, respectively, to explain galactic behaviors.

Now, Professor Tomonori Totani from the University of Tokyo has made a breakthrough in observing dark matter. Utilizing data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, Totani captured an image of dark matter in gamma rays, providing a glimpse into this hidden component of the universe.

While the exact nature of dark matter remains a mystery, the prevailing theory suggests it consists of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS) that emit gamma rays upon collision. Totani’s recent findings, published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, showcase gamma rays emanating from the center of the Milky Way.

However, some skepticism surrounds this discovery, with experts emphasizing the need for thorough analysis and validation from the scientific community. Renée Hložek, a cosmologist from the University of Toronto, points out the importance of considering alternative explanations and ensuring the rigor of the research process.

Despite the cautious optimism surrounding his findings, Totani acknowledges the need for further scrutiny and independent verification from fellow researchers. This discovery could potentially revolutionize our understanding of the universe, prompting a careful and meticulous examination by the scientific community.
