Cadmus Delorme is prepared to welcome University of Regina graduates at their upcoming commencement ceremony where he will officially take on his role as the institution’s 10th chancellor. To mark this special occasion, Delorme will don a unique beaded chancellor stole that holds significant meaning, inspired by the late Murray Sinclair’s attire and following traditions observed by other universities.
The chancellor’s stole is a ceremonial sash worn alongside the chancellor’s robe, symbolizing the official status of the university’s leader. Delorme expressed his desire to infuse his First Nation heritage into his role and represent not only the university but also its students and alumni.
In the design process of the stole, Delorme entrusted his close friend, Thomas Benjoe, a skilled beader and CEO of Flowing River Capital. Benjoe incorporated elements of Delorme’s life journey into the stole, such as symbols representing family members, friends, and academic achievements, all intricately woven into the piece.
The stole’s design includes floral patterns symbolizing various aspects of Delorme’s life, with each element carrying deep sentimental significance. The gold buttons represent stars, signifying ancestral connections and protection over Delorme’s tenure as chancellor and the future generation of students.
Delorme expressed his satisfaction with the finished stole, praising Benjoe’s craftsmanship and the meaningful representation of his life within the piece. He emphasized the strong bond between himself and Benjoe, describing their relationship as akin to brothers.
Both Delorme and Benjoe anticipate the stole becoming a lasting symbol at the university, embodying their collaboration and the value of supporting each other’s milestones. They hope that this initiative will inspire other educational institutions to embrace cultural representation and celebrate diverse identities.
As the stole takes its place in university history, Delorme and Benjoe look forward to seeing it shine under the spotlight, symbolizing unity and encouraging future generations to aspire to leadership roles.
