A teenager in Calgary faces multiple criminal charges for allegedly using AI technology to manipulate photos of teenage girls from various local high schools in a sexual manner. Authorities executed a search warrant at the teen’s residence on November 13, confiscating two cellphones, a tablet, and a laptop. The investigation was initiated in October following a tip received by the child exploitation unit (ICE) of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) regarding the distribution of child sexual abuse materials on social media.
The accused teenager reportedly employed AI to target teenage girls from different high schools in the Calgary area. To safeguard the victims’ identities, law enforcement has refrained from disclosing the accused individual’s identity or the schools involved. Support services have been extended to the victims, and police urge anyone encountering the images online to promptly report them without further sharing.
The 17-year-old has been charged with offenses related to producing, possessing, and circulating child sexual abuse materials, as well as criminal harassment. According to ALERT ICE Staff Sgt. Mark Auger, the Criminal Code now refers to such materials as “child sexual abuse and exploitation material” rather than “child pornography.” Auger emphasized the severity of the situation, cautioning that this behavior constitutes a serious criminal offense and not a harmless prank.
Auger could not confirm whether there was any connection between the accused and the targeted girls or if the victims were chosen randomly. He stressed the increasing prevalence of such incidents with advancing technology accessibility. The accused has been released under court-imposed conditions, including restrictions on interacting with individuals under 16 years old unless incidental to work or school and limitations on internet-capable electronic devices except for educational or professional purposes. The next court hearing is scheduled for January 8, 2026.
