Canada’s trade negotiations with the U.S. are progressing positively, leading Canadian companies to pivot away from heavy reliance on American trade, according to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly. Following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, Joly highlighted the importance of the respectful dialogue and emphasized the ongoing negotiations moving in the right direction.

While no final deal has been reached yet, discussions are advancing positively, as per Carney, who mentioned that both countries are currently working on the terms of an agreement. The focus primarily revolves around sectors like steel, aluminum, and energy, with additional efforts directed towards addressing tariffs on the forestry sector.

Joly reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting jobs in the auto sector and diversifying trade markets by increasing exports to Europe. Notably, Quebec’s Aluminerie Alouette has significantly shifted its export focus to Europe, showcasing the effectiveness of market diversification strategies.

Algoma Steel’s CEO, Michael Garcia, expressed challenges faced by the company due to the significant tariffs imposed by the U.S., affecting their access to the American market. Despite the obstacles, Garcia sees potential growth opportunities in the Canadian market, especially with the government’s Buy Canadian policy gaining momentum.

In response to new tariffs announced by Trump, New Brunswick is contemplating retaliatory measures, particularly concerning softwood lumber exports. Premier Susan Holt emphasized the need for evaluating strategies to influence decision-making and secure fair trade deals that benefit the Canadian economy.

Overall, Canada’s efforts to navigate trade negotiations with the U.S. reflect a strategic shift towards diversification and resilience in the face of evolving trade dynamics and tariff challenges.
