Southwestern Ontario native Jeremy Hansen, hailing from Ailsa Craig, northwest of London, is gearing up to make history as the first Canadian astronaut to journey to the moon. With NASA’s Artemis II mission set to launch in as soon as a week, Canada will join the exclusive ranks of nations sending humans into deep space.
Artemis II will propel Hansen and his American counterparts around the moon’s far side, pushing the boundaries of human exploration further into space than ever before. The mission holds significant importance, with Gordon Osinski, a Western University earth sciences professor, emphasizing its monumental impact on the Canadian Space Program’s legacy.
Scheduled for a 10-day duration, the mission aims to collect critical scientific data to test both the spacecraft’s capabilities and the crew’s endurance in readiness for future lunar expeditions, including Artemis III, which will involve astronauts landing on the moon. The launch is tentatively set for Feb. 8, subject to favorable weather conditions.
In anticipation of Hansen’s historic journey, various members of the London-area community have been rallying in support. Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute (IDCI), Hansen’s alma mater, has been actively engaged, with students and staff eagerly tracking the mission’s progress. The establishment even initiated the Artemis IDCI Explorers Club, led by teachers Phil Raven and Jennifer Rowe, to champion their esteemed alumnus.
Additionally, London-based musician Emm Gryner has composed a song titled “Touch the Sky,” celebrating Hansen’s imminent space voyage. Inspired by Hansen’s roots in Ailsa Craig and his connection to the moon, the song seeks to uplift listeners during challenging times.
Moreover, Western University professor Gordon Osinski, who mentored Hansen in geology during their Arctic expeditions, will witness the launch firsthand in Florida. As the only Canadian scientist on the Artemis III mission’s science team, Osinski’s involvement underscores the critical role Artemis II plays in laying the foundation for future lunar exploration.
