The skies over the highly contested Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk are filled with drones, making it risky for military convoys to navigate the streets due to the high visibility and potential targeting. Despite the dense fog covering the area recently, a video surfaced on social media depicting a small group of Russian soldiers moving through Pokrovsk on motorcycles and in a car with missing doors.
The brief clip, shared by Russian military bloggers, offered a glimpse into the strategic battleground of Pokrovsk, resembling a grim scene from a dystopian movie like “Mad Max.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that adverse weather conditions were aiding Russia in its attempts to infiltrate the city, which has been a target for over a year.
Maps of the front lines indicate that Pokrovsk is teetering on the edge of falling, with some experts predicting that Russia is poised to seize both Pokrovsk and the nearby city of Myrnohrad. A Ukrainian drone operator known as Goose mentioned an increase in Russian presence in the area, operating in small groups and utilizing vehicles and motorcycles in recent days.
The city of Pokrovsk, previously home to 60,000 residents before the invasion, is now a battleground where Russia is strategically encroaching to encircle it. Unlike the direct assault on Bakhmut earlier in the conflict, Russia is employing a pincer movement to surround Pokrovsk from the south and northeast.
With hundreds of troops already in the city, Russia aims to establish offensive positions to cut off Ukraine’s supply lines and gain control to advance further north into the Donetsk region. Ukrainian military estimates suggest around 150,000 Russian troops are amassing in the area, with a sizable contingent already present in Pokrovsk.
Pokrovsk is considered a ‘grey zone,’ where control shifts constantly between Russia and Ukraine, monitored closely through drone surveillance. The threat of drones has forced troops on both sides to adjust their logistics, with Ukrainian infantry traveling long distances on foot to avoid being targeted by reconnaissance drones.
The city’s basements have been transformed into military positions as Ukraine strives to maintain control amid overwhelming odds. Despite evacuation warnings, some residents remain in the war-torn city, defying orders to leave their homes. The challenging situation underscores the ongoing struggle for control and the resilience of those caught in the conflict.
