Environment and Climate Change Canada has revamped its weather warning system nationwide. The traditional general watches and warnings have been replaced with a new colour-coded, risk-tiered system. This update aims to provide the public with a clearer understanding of how upcoming weather events could affect them and what precautions they should take.

The transition aligns with recommendations from the World Meteorological Association and mirrors changes already adopted by 31 weather agencies in Europe. Environment and Climate Change Canada will continue to issue various warnings such as severe thunderstorm alerts, rainfall advisories, snowfall notifications, and wind cautions throughout the year.

Special weather statements, displayed in grey, will also persist. These statements offer details on weather incidents that are potentially significant or noteworthy but do not meet the criteria for a full warning. Going forward, each warning will be assigned a colour-coded alert level of yellow, orange, or red based on an evaluation of the forecast confidence and potential impacts of the weather event.

The severity of the alert level corresponds to the expected impact and the confidence in those impacts occurring. Yellow alerts, the most common, cover a broad range of hazardous weather conditions that could disrupt travel and pose health risks. Orange alerts signify storms likely to cause widespread damage, while red alerts indicate life-threatening weather conditions, urging immediate action to safeguard lives and property.

By emphasizing the potential impacts of weather events, the updated system aims to enhance preparedness and improve communication on necessary precautions. When a warning is issued, it is crucial to review the details and act accordingly to ensure safety.
