Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least 26 individuals on Tuesday, following Israel’s accusation that Hamas breached a ceasefire agreement in the Palestinian region. The fatalities included five individuals in a residence struck in the Bureij refugee camp, four in a structure in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, and five in a car in Khan Younis, including two children. According to Ahmed al-Farra, the head of pediatrics at Nasser Hospital where the bodies were taken. Witness accounts confirmed ongoing Israeli airstrikes across Gaza into early Wednesday, with additional strikes reported in Gaza City.
Netanyahu’s office released a statement without specifying the rationale behind the planned attacks. However, an Israeli military official cited Hamas’s violation of the ceasefire by attacking Israeli forces in an Israeli-controlled area. The official labeled this as a clear breach of the ceasefire terms. Israel informed the United States before commencing the airstrikes, as per two U.S. officials speaking anonymously to The Associated Press.
Hamas denied responsibility for an attack on Israeli forces in Rafah, as reported in Israeli media, emphasizing compliance with the ceasefire conditions. Netanyahu accused Hamas of misconduct by providing incorrect remains during the body return process. Both sides have exchanged accusations of violations under the ceasefire agreement.
The ceasefire involved Hamas releasing all living hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian convicts and detainees, while Israel withdrew its troops and ceased offensive operations. The issue of returning deceased hostages’ remains has become a significant challenge, with disagreements on the handling of the process. Netanyahu alleged that Hamas manipulated the discovery of remains to create a false impression of compliance with body recovery efforts.
Efforts to search for and retrieve remaining bodies intensified with the use of heavy machinery from Egypt. Bulldozers were deployed in Khan Younis and Nuseirat in Gaza, where tunnels and rubble are being scrutinized for the missing individuals. The search operations are critical given the vast destruction in Gaza and the urgency to conclude the body recovery process.
Gaza health authorities reported a death toll of 68,000 from the Israeli strikes, with thousands still unaccounted for. The conflict initiated when Hamas-led fighters infiltrated southern Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages being taken back to Gaza. Despite ongoing demolition activities by Israeli forces in Gaza, concerns persist over the remaining Hamas tunnels, with efforts to neutralize them continuing.
The situation remains tense in the region, with uncertainties surrounding the ceasefire and the complex dynamics between Israel and Hamas.
