MPs grilled a member of a group known for advocating long ballots, questioning his involvement in flooding certain federal ridings with multiple candidates in recent years. Tomas Szuchewycz, an organizer with the Longest Ballot Committee, defended the group’s actions at a House procedures committee meeting. He urged MPs to abstain from setting election rules and proposed an independent body oversee them.

The Longest Ballot Committee has orchestrated numerous Independent candidates running in various ridings since 2021, with over 90 candidates participating in Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s Ontario riding during the recent election. They also doubled candidate numbers in an August byelection where Poilievre reclaimed a seat.

Currently, candidates must obtain 100 signatures from voters within a riding to run. The Longest Ballot Committee had voters sign multiple candidates’ nomination forms. Conservative MP Michael Cooper criticized the group’s methods, alleging they had people sign forms with blank candidate names, which Szuchewycz refuted.

The group faced further scrutiny for attempting to submit forms with “any and all candidates” listed. Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault mentioned past incidents where forms were submitted without identified candidates. Szuchewycz clarified that such forms were rejected by local election officials.

Elections Canada had to adjust rules due to the influx of candidates orchestrated by the Longest Ballot Committee, leading to confusion among voters and delays in vote counting. Bloc Québécois MP Christine Normandin questioned the effectiveness of the group’s tactics in promoting electoral reform.

Discussions arose about potential rule changes to address the issue of long ballots, with Perrault considering requiring unique signatures for each candidate to deter the group’s efforts. Suggestions included fines for voters signing multiple forms and potentially limiting each candidate to one official agent per riding.

Political science professor Lori Turnbull acknowledged the group’s argument but noted challenges in practical implementation. Poilievre called for legislation to combat what he termed the “longest ballot scam.” The head of Elections Canada expressed openness to rule changes to address long ballot protests.
