Saskatoon police have confirmed that a 25-year-old man was shot during a tense situation following a mental health-related call to a trailer park in Sutherland. The man is currently hospitalized and in stable condition.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) was brought in after the man was shot by police in the course of a 10-hour standoff that began in the afternoon on December 19 at Rayner Place Park in the Sutherland neighborhood. The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) was informed about ongoing mental health issues and alleged threats of harm, leading to their involvement.

During the standoff, the 25-year-old posted updates on his Facebook page. Negotiations with the man by the police began in the late afternoon and continued into the evening. Eventually, around 11:41 p.m., a confrontation occurred where a member of the tactical support unit discharged their firearm, injuring the man. Despite being wounded, the man refused to come out of the residence until he was taken into custody by SPS members at about 2:09 a.m.

SIRT stated that they will investigate the police’s actions during the incident, including the man’s arrest and the recovery of several knives at the scene. No additional details will be disclosed at this time.
