Avi Lewis, a candidate vying for leadership in the NDP, emphasized the need for Canada to break its addiction to increasing fossil fuel production. In a recent panel discussion alongside rivals Rob Ashton and Heather McPherson, Lewis voiced his stance against further expansion of natural gas, oil, and coal in the country. He emphasized the necessity for distinct policies that set the federal NDP apart from the Liberals and stressed the importance of diverging opinions between federal and provincial party branches.

Highlighting the urgency for a shift towards cleaner energy sources, Lewis referenced the United Nations’ data, attributing fossil fuels as the primary contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. He likened society’s reliance on fossil fuels to an addiction driven by financial gain.

McPherson, an MP from an oil-producing region, did not challenge Lewis’s position during the discussion but later dismissed it as nothing new, citing the NDP’s longstanding commitment to such policies. While the party’s 2021 policy book does not explicitly address limiting fossil fuel production expansion, it does pledge to end government support for fossil fuel subsidies.

The differing perspectives within the NDP on fossil fuel policies have been evident in past leadership tenures, with challenges in effectively communicating the party’s stance. This conflict extends to the party’s provincial branches in regions heavily reliant on fossil fuel production.

McPherson outlined her focus on creating job opportunities for the youth in various sectors, including green jobs through a proposed Youth Climate Corps. She also advocated for initiatives like high-speed rail, home retrofitting, and a clean energy corridor to promote sustainable development.

Ashton emphasized the importance of expanding renewable energy sources like wind power, advocating for the domestic production of wind turbines to create unionized job opportunities. He acknowledged the complexities surrounding fossil fuel projects, emphasizing the need for environmental considerations and economic growth with reduced emissions.

The panel discussion took place at the Mouseland Gala in Ottawa, moderated by a frequent panelist on CBC’s Power and Politics. Two other candidates, Tanille Johnston and Tony McQuail, contributed video remarks to the event. The ongoing NDP leadership race reflects a diversity of views on rebuilding the party and addressing crucial environmental and economic challenges.
