Heather McPherson, the sole sitting MP among the candidates, emphasized the importance of Quebec’s support for the NDP, stressing, “Our party cannot progress without Quebec.”
Quebec, with a significant number of seats in the House of Commons, is considered crucial for any party aiming to win in federal elections. However, the NDP has faced challenges in maintaining its Quebec presence since the “orange wave” under Jack Layton.
The candidates, primarily from Western Canada, pledged to enhance their French language skills to better connect with French-speaking Canadians. Despite their efforts, moderator Karl Bélanger noted the varying levels of French proficiency among the contenders, underscoring the necessity of bilingualism for effective leadership.
The debate’s limitations in French proficiency were acknowledged by Mélaine Richer, a former NDP communications director, who highlighted the significance of connecting with French-speaking communities across Canada. Richer emphasized the importance of leaders making sincere efforts to improve their language skills, citing past examples like Mark Carney.
Looking ahead, the NDP’s next debate is scheduled to be conducted entirely in English in British Columbia, with the party set to elect its new leader in March.
