Ontario Provincial Police have reported their most significant fentanyl seizure to date, following a bust in Windsor. Law enforcement officials uncovered 46 kilograms of the dangerous substance in late September through the execution of search warrants at various locations and in vehicles within the southwestern Ontario border city. According to authorities, the quantity of fentanyl seized was equivalent to about 460,000 street-level doses, posing a severe threat to a moderately sized city.
Two individuals, aged 25 from Windsor and 29 from Vancouver, have been arrested and are facing multiple drug-related charges. They are scheduled to appear in court in Windsor on December 8. The investigation was initiated in the fall of 2024 after identifying two key members associated with a drug trafficking network, both linked to known criminal organizations. The probe involved a collaboration of Ontario Provincial Police and Windsor police officers and units.
Aside from fentanyl, the raids also resulted in the seizure of cocaine, heroin, firearms, cash, cellphones, jewelry, and other illicit substances, with a collective estimated value of $6.5 million. The authorities are continuing their efforts to trace the origins of the fentanyl, emphasizing the drug’s national enforcement priority due to its lethal nature.
Thomas Carrique, the OPP commissioner, highlighted the importance of halting the distribution of fentanyl across communities, stating, “We are working with our partners across Ontario, and beyond, to stop the flow of this deadly drug into the communities we serve.” Windsor’s deputy police chief, Jason Crowley, emphasized the significant impact of removing such a substantial amount of fentanyl from the streets, stressing the value of collaborative efforts at local and provincial levels.
Community activist Lisa Valente, founder of the Windsor women’s addiction recovery group House of Hope, expressed approval of the fentanyl seizure, describing it as a positive development amid a community crisis. Valente noted that any scarcity of drugs in circulation could prompt users to seek help and treatment, potentially reducing drug-related harm and fatalities.
