In his personal gym in Calgary, Kurt Oatway is engaged in weightlifting and pull-ups as part of his final training regimen ahead of the 2026 Paralympic Games in Italy. Now 41 years old, the accomplished sit-skier is resolutely pushing himself to reclaim his position at the pinnacle of the global stage following a serious accident that prevented his participation in the 2022 Beijing Games.
Reflecting on the unfortunate incident at the world championships in Lillehammer, Norway, where he suffered multiple injuries including broken bones, torn ligaments, and a punctured lung mere weeks before the Paralympics, Oatway expressed his determination to not let the setback define his career. Despite the challenges, he remained steadfast in his resolve to make a comeback.
Having grown up in Edmonton within a skiing family, Oatway first honed his skills in the sport at the age of five. However, a life-altering spinal cord injury sustained during a rock climbing mishap in 2007 compelled him to explore adaptive skiing. Following his introduction to sit-skiing at Mission Ridge, Oatway’s rapid progression from novice to competitive skier impressed his coach, Gord Poulton, who recognized his immense potential early on.
Transitioning from a period of despair to one of triumph, Oatway’s return to skiing not only motivated him but also inspired his family and the supportive Saskatchewan ski community. Overcoming financial hurdles and logistical challenges, Oatway’s mother, Carol Cox, played a pivotal role in facilitating his skiing pursuits, emphasizing his enjoyment and the positive impact he has had on others.
Embarking on a racing career with Team Canada after his initial season in Saskatchewan, Oatway achieved a remarkable gold medal victory in the sitting super giant slalom event at the 2018 Paralympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. This unexpected triumph highlighted his resilience and determination, propelling him to continue his quest for success on the global stage.
As he prepares for what may be his final Paralympic appearance in Milan and Cortino, Oatway remains grateful for his roots in Saskatchewan and is resolute in his ambition to secure a podium finish once again. Embracing the journey thus far, he acknowledges his humble beginnings and values the opportunities that have shaped his remarkable athletic career.
