Paulatuk, N.W.T., is known as the south wind capital of the Arctic. The community has a history of utilizing the strong southerly winds for various purposes, such as powering boats, providing natural direction indicators with snowdrifts, and aiding in the traditional method of drying meat. Now, the hamlet aims to harness this wind power to generate electricity as part of its aspiration to achieve carbon neutrality.

Efforts towards this goal emphasize the importance of ensuring efficient use of energy in homes to prevent wastage. Lily-Ann Green, a member of the Paulatuk Energy Working Group, highlighted the significance of addressing issues like inadequate weather stripping on doors and windows, which lead to energy loss. Residents like Kourtney and Stacy Wolkie have faced challenges due to unresolved maintenance issues in their Housing N.W.T. unit, forcing them to resort to makeshift solutions like sealing drafty doors with silicone.

A report by the N.W.T. Bureau of Statistics revealed that nearly half of the homes in Paulatuk experience core needs, indicating shortcomings in suitability, adequacy, and affordability. To realize its renewable energy vision, the community plans to implement wind turbines, solar panels, and a battery storage system. However, the focus remains on enhancing housing conditions and energy efficiency to maximize the benefits of clean energy generation.

The community energy plan, Sivulliit Energy, prioritizes improvements in housing conditions to complement the renewable energy project. Mayor Raymond Ruben emphasized the importance of optimizing energy usage in efficient homes to avoid wastage. Initiatives like a housing research project, aimed at collecting data on energy consumption, and organizing courses on winterizing homes and reducing power demands, underscore the commitment to creating sustainable and comfortable living spaces in Paulatuk.

By addressing housing issues and promoting energy efficiency, Paulatuk aims to empower its residents with the knowledge and resources to lower energy costs and create a more sustainable future.
