Rugby Canada has announced the successful completion of its fundraising initiative, “Mission: Win Rugby World Cup 2025,” surpassing its target by raising over $1 million. This amount, combined with the $2.6 million provided by the organization, filled the financial gap in the preparation plan of Canada’s head coach, Kevin Rouet. Despite finishing as runners-up in the final against England on September 27 at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium, the campaign achieved its fundraising goal.

The campaign, which aimed to raise $1 million, garnered a total of $1.06 million through proceeds and pledges from more than 1,500 donors, including contributions from community rugby clubs, the Monty Heald Fund of the Canadian Rugby Foundation, and substantial donations from individuals. Expressing gratitude for the support, Coach Rouet emphasized the significant impact of the campaign on both the team’s performance and overall preparations for the Rugby World Cup.

The funds facilitated the organization of two additional pre-tournament training camps, one in Chula Vista, Calif., preceding the Pacific Four Series in May, and another in Perth, Ont., ahead of a series of test matches in South Africa in July. Additionally, the financial support covered travel expenses, accommodation costs outside of the World Cup, nutrition resources, and additional medical and strength and conditioning staff during the tournament.

Rugby Canada’s CEO, Nathan Bombrys, highlighted the collective effort that surpassed the fundraising goal, emphasizing the belief and support shown by the nation towards the team’s aspirations. Despite the success of the campaign, Coach Rouet acknowledged the ongoing financial challenges faced by the Canadian team, emphasizing the need to maximize resources each year.

Looking ahead, Coach Rouet anticipates potential budget constraints post-2025 Women’s World Cup, with leaner financial provisions in the upcoming years due to scheduled major sporting events. While he remains optimistic about future opportunities, he acknowledges the evolving financial landscape within the federation and the need for strategic financial planning moving forward.

The fundraising success not only provided essential support for the Canadian team but also showcased the unity and backing of the nation towards achieving sporting excellence.
