A Sudanese paramilitary group is currently engaged in conflict with remaining resistance forces in El Fasher, a city in Darfur that has been under siege for 18 months. The capture of El Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) could deepen the divide between rival military factions in the country. Concerns have been raised about potential reprisals against the approximately 250,000 civilians still in El Fasher and the possibility of escalated violence in other parts of Sudan.

Following the RSF’s claim of capturing the army’s headquarters in El Fasher on Sunday, reports indicate that the paramilitary forces have been detaining fleeing civilians in nearby areas. The International Organization for Migration reported that around 26,000 individuals have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict. Military sources revealed that thousands of soldiers, along with former rebel groups, are surrounded by RSF fighters in western El Fasher.

UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher expressed deep concern over civilian casualties and forced displacements in El Fasher. He emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and stressed the importance of providing humanitarian aid to the trapped civilians. The ongoing conflict in Darfur, a stronghold of the RSF, has raised fears of potential partitioning and further destabilization in the region.

The RSF’s control of Darfur could have significant repercussions, leading to potential geographical divisions akin to those seen in Libya. Analysts warn that the RSF may use its current momentum to expand its influence and engage in conflicts in other parts of Sudan. The situation in Darfur underscores the urgent need for peace talks and humanitarian access to avert further humanitarian crises.

Despite previous efforts to address the conflict, the situation remains precarious, with the RSF making territorial gains and advancing towards strategic locations. The involvement of external actors and the supply of advanced weaponry to the RSF have complicated the prospects for a peaceful resolution. The UN has called for an end to foreign military support and interference in Sudan to facilitate a political solution.

As the conflict escalates, concerns persist about the safety and well-being of civilians caught in the crossfire. Reports suggest that fleeing civilians are being directed to displacement camps, raising fears of further displacement and humanitarian challenges. Activists have warned of potential revenge attacks on civilian populations, highlighting the urgent need for international intervention to protect vulnerable communities in Sudan.
