Christopher Best reassured his family about the polar bear photos he shared on social media while working at a radar site in Nunavut. His mother, Shelly Cox, mentioned that he had informed his stepfather that the bears were at a safe distance before the tragic incident on August 8, 2024.

According to a report by Nasittuq Corporation, the company overseeing North Warning System sites across a vast region, including Brevoort Island off the eastern coast of Baffin Island, where Best was stationed. The report revealed that Best, 34, ventured outside with his camera despite being warned about a nearby bear. Tragically, he encountered a second bear that cut off his escape route to safety, leading to a fatal attack.

Cox expressed that the incident could have been prevented with improved safety measures like fences and motion-sensor alarms at radar sites. The report highlighted that there had been no previous bear-related fatalities during the operation of the North Warning System or its predecessor for over seven decades.

Best, originally from Labrador, had diverse work experience ranging from cleaning barbecues in Toronto to assisting on a reality TV show. He was adept with computers and had returned to work for the company in a logistics role while awaiting security clearance. The day before the attack, Best and his crew spotted a bear from a vehicle and posted photos online.

Despite receiving polar bear awareness training, the report noted missing documentation for Best’s course completion. It recommended stricter safety protocols, such as obtaining permission from a supervisor before going outside after hours and making public announcements when bears are present.

Employment and Social Development Canada is still finalizing its report on the incident, emphasizing the responsibility of federally regulated employers to ensure employee safety. Nasittuq Corporation refrained from commenting until the government report is released, expressing condolences and concern for all affected by the tragedy.

Best’s personal belongings, including his camera and SD card with photos, were returned to his family. Cox remains determined to uncover all details surrounding her son’s death, emphasizing her desire for transparency and closure.
