Three young individuals have lost their lives, and a fourth is in critical condition following a solo car accident on a gravel road close to Hanover on Tuesday. The tragic incident involved four teenagers who were students at John Diefenbaker Senior School (JDSS) in Hanover, aged between 15 and 17, according to West Grey Police Constable Allyson Iles. Among them, three teens, comprising two boys and a girl, were ejected from the vehicle and succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
Emergency responders had to extract the fourth teenager, a boy, who was trapped in the vehicle. He was initially taken to Hanover District Hospital and later airlifted by Ornge air ambulance to London. The accident occurred around noon on Concession Road 2 SDR near Allan Park Road, shortly after a Remembrance Day assembly had concluded at the school, with students on a lunch break, as per a parent interviewed by CBC News.
Constable Iles described the day as emotionally challenging for all first responders involved. This tragic crash follows another fatal incident six months prior, which claimed the lives of four teens and a teacher from the nearby Walkerton community.
The devastating impact of the recent loss has deeply affected the community, prompting families and friends to come together for support. Sheena Sachs, a parent with children at JDSS, expressed the profound sorrow felt by the devastated community, emphasizing the youthfulness of the victims and the unimaginable grief their families must be enduring.
In response to the tragedy, the Bluewater District School Board announced the dispatch of a trauma response team to offer grief counseling and additional assistance. The school board extended sympathies to all those affected, acknowledging the widespread impact of the heartbreaking event on various school communities within the district.
Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson assured the community of solidarity and support during this distressing time, conveying heartfelt condolences to the affected families and individuals. Expressing shared sentiments of care and strength, the mayor emphasized the community’s commitment to standing together through this profound loss.
