President Trump and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie confirmed on social media that there will be no deployment of federal agents to San Francisco. This unexpected decision comes as Trump pushes for increased enforcement against crime and illegal immigration in Democratic-led cities nationwide.
Mayor Lurie mentioned in a post that Trump personally called him to inform him of the cancellation of any federal deployment plans. While the city will continue collaborating with federal agencies to combat drug-related crimes, Mayor Lurie emphasized that “militarized immigration enforcement” would not be beneficial.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, acknowledged the agreement, stating that the federal government had prepared for a surge in San Francisco but decided to cancel it after speaking with Mayor Lurie. He also mentioned that prominent tech executives had expressed optimism about the future of San Francisco.
Although initially indicating that National Guard troops might be sent to Democratic-led cities, including San Francisco, Trump’s administration faced legal challenges. Reports emerged that over 100 federal agents were to be dispatched to San Francisco for heightened immigration enforcement, a move that sparked protests.
Despite the halt in federal deployment, a group of protesters gathered at a Coast Guard base in the Bay Area. The demonstration led to clashes with federal agents using less-lethal rounds to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries to some protesters.
Local leaders, such as Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee, condemned the potential federal deployment, emphasizing unity and rejecting external interference in their communities. Trump’s immigration policies have faced criticism from Democrats, who argue that the crackdown on illegal immigrants has negatively impacted families and businesses.
Trump’s longstanding focus on addressing crime in San Francisco has stirred debate, with his administration considering sending federal agents to the city. However, the recent decision not to deploy federal agents marks a significant shift in approach towards immigration enforcement in San Francisco.
