The U.S. military carried out a series of attacks on vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals and one survivor, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Hegseth stated that the targeted individuals were suspected drug traffickers. Mexican authorities took charge of the search-and-rescue efforts for the lone survivor following the strikes on Monday. The vessels were identified by U.S. intelligence as part of known narcotics transportation routes, carrying illegal substances, as per Hegseth, who presented a brief video showing the vessels exploding in the water.

The recent strikes in the Pacific Ocean follow a string of similar operations in the Caribbean that began on September 2. Concerns have been raised by experts regarding the legality of these actions, which have resulted in the deaths of at least 57 individuals. The U.S. Coast Guard, typically involved in drug interdiction efforts, did not appear to have been engaged before the strikes.

The U.S. military presence in the Caribbean has notably increased, including the deployment of assets such as the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, guided missile destroyers, F-35 fighter jets, a nuclear submarine, and around 6,500 troops. Recent maneuvers involved flying supersonic heavy bombers along the Venezuelan coast, sparking speculation about potential regime change attempts in Venezuela.

Critics have questioned the transparency and justification for the military strikes, with some U.S. Congress members, including Republican Sen. James Lankford, expressing unease over the lack of information provided by the administration. Despite international condemnation and concerns about extrajudicial killings, the U.S. administration remains resolute in its pursuit of alleged drug traffickers in the region.

The strikes have triggered diplomatic tensions, with neighboring countries like Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago reacting strongly against what they perceive as military provocations. UN experts have condemned the actions, citing violations of international law and sovereignty. The situation remains complex, with ongoing debates over the legality and consequences of the U.S. military operations in the region.
