Historian Brandon Marriott recently shared insights on Lester Harper’s experiences during World War I in an interview. Harper, a farmer from Pouce Coupe, enlisted in the army in 1916 with an optimistic outlook on the adventure and travel opportunities the war might bring. However, his perception quickly changed upon reaching France.

In his letters to his wife, Mabel, Harper expressed raw and detailed accounts of the war, deviating from the typical impersonal tone of World War I correspondence. Despite self-censoring to shield Mabel from the horrors, Harper’s letters revealed the stark contrast between his conservative upbringing and the realities he witnessed in England and France.

Marriott highlighted Harper’s use of the term “slaughter” to describe the brutal nature of the war, emphasizing the staggering death toll and the dehumanizing conditions faced by soldiers. Immersing himself in Harper’s story deepened Marriott’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families.

Harper’s skepticism towards political visits to the front line and his poignant reflections on the futility of war underscored the toll the conflict took on him. His bravery and humility were exemplified by his actions during a daring raid in 1918, for which he was awarded a medal.

Despite his wartime heroics, Harper rarely spoke of his experiences, reflecting the lasting emotional scars many veterans carry. Marriott emphasized the importance of supporting and understanding veterans, acknowledging the enduring impact of military service on individuals like Lester Harper.
