Could Venezuela be considered the “most dangerous threat globally”? This notion arises from fictional U.S. intelligence operative Jack Ryan.

Jack Ryan, a character created by author Tom Clancy, is renowned from Clancy’s novels, various film adaptations, and a popular TV series on Amazon Prime for four seasons.

Following recent U.S. military actions in Venezuela’s capital and the apprehension of President Nicolás Maduro, social media has been buzzing with references to Ryan’s fictional observations about the South American nation and its perceived “threat.”

An Instagram reel titled “Venezuela explained” featuring a snippet from the TV series has garnered nearly 40 million views in the past 48 hours and has been widely shared across various social platforms.

The particular scene, from the inaugural episode of the second season of Jack Ryan in 2019, showcases the iconic spy, portrayed by John Krasinski (famous as Jim from The Office), addressing university students about why a struggling Venezuela might pose a greater security risk to the U.S. than countries like Russia, China, or North Korea.

Ryan’s speech is loosely inspired by Venezuela’s actual situation at the time, prompting speculation about its relevance to the current real-world events.

Even the co-creator of the show acknowledges this.

“The objective of that season wasn’t to predict but to make it plausible,” mentioned Carlton Cuse in an interview published on Sunday.

In his discourse, Ryan highlights Venezuela as potentially the most abundant source of oil and minerals globally but also facing one of the severest humanitarian crises in recent history.

He discusses the fictional leader Nicolás Reyes (played by Jordi Mollà), portrayed as having halved the national economy and quadrupled poverty rates during his six-year tenure, marked by a surge of nationalist sentiment.

Reyes seems to embody elements of both Maduro and his predecessor, the late Hugo Chávez, the popular socialist figure who governed Venezuela until his demise in 2013.
