Wabush Airport has resumed operations following flight disruptions that left numerous travelers stranded before the holiday season. Transport Canada’s spokesperson, Hicham Ayoun, confirmed in an email that the airport and runway are back in service as of 5:00 p.m. N.T. on Monday. The reopening comes after adverse weather conditions, including extreme flash-freezing and sub-zero temperatures, caused a buildup of ice on the runway, leading to its closure for four days.

PAL Airlines warned of potential further flight disruptions due to the current runway conditions, resulting in some flights operating at reduced capacity. Efforts to improve the runway surface over the weekend were hindered by temperatures below -20°C, limiting the effectiveness of standard de-icing chemicals, as stated by Ayoun.

PAL Airlines acknowledged significant operational disruptions and pledged to assist passengers affected by the delays. Passengers stranded at Wabush were informed of arrangements for buses to transport them to Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Meanwhile, passengers at Goose Bay Airport expressed frustration over the flight delays, with some recounting their experiences of canceled flights and lack of communication from the airline.

Passenger accounts, such as that of Karlene Williams, highlight the challenges faced by travelers, including extended delays and limited assistance from the airline. Lucas Fitzpatrick shared his ordeal of being stranded in Quebec City after multiple flight cancellations disrupted his journey home to Labrador City.

Despite the difficulties, efforts are underway to address the situation, with airport crews and airlines working diligently to restore operations and accommodate affected passengers. Updates on the runway conditions and flight schedules are expected as the situation evolves.
