Michelle Zhang, not yet a teenager, faced off against world-renowned chess player Hikaru Nakamura at the Maritime Open Chess Championship in Summerside, P.E.I. Despite Nakamura underestimating her, Zhang, 12, held her ground for 65 moves in the first round. She has been playing chess since age 6 and regularly participates in the tournament, but Nakamura, a popular online chess streamer with over three million subscribers on YouTube, was a surprise addition.
Nakamura’s presence at the tournament caused a stir among players and fans, with many likening him to a celebrity like Taylor Swift. The chess superstar saw his trip to P.E.I. as an opportunity to give back to the chess community and reminisced about his own experiences as a young player meeting grandmasters.
Nakamura’s participation in the Maritime Open was driven by his need to play 11 classical-rated chess games before the end of the year to qualify for the 2026 FIDE Candidates tournament. For Zhang, the experience was valuable, despite not achieving the desired result. She watched Nakamura’s post-match analysis on YouTube, where he praised her skills and offered insights into her gameplay.
Reflecting on the match, Zhang found watching the recap educational and was pleased to hear Nakamura admit to feeling nervous during their game. With a significant age gap between them, Zhang remains focused on continuous improvement in chess without setting specific dreams or goals.
The encounter between the young chess prodigy and the seasoned player was a memorable experience for both, highlighting the passion and dedication within the chess community.
