Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington this Friday to discuss Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and long-range strike options. The decision follows discussions between the two leaders over the weekend, with a focus on potentially supplying long-range Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv.
A Ukrainian delegation, led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, is scheduled to visit Washington ahead of the meeting to further these talks. Kyiv has been advocating for the acquisition of U.S.-manufactured Tomahawk missiles, emphasizing their intended use solely for military purposes and not against civilian targets. However, Moscow has expressed concerns about the potential escalation such a move could bring.
Zelenskyy indicated that he has already briefed Trump on the quantity of Tomahawks Ukraine requires, acknowledging that certain details are better discussed in person than over the phone. Trump has hinted at the possibility of providing the missiles to Ukraine, but also mentioned the potential for dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the matter.
In addition to the missile discussions, Ukraine and the U.S. are nearing a significant agreement on sharing drone technology. This partnership is seen as crucial by European diplomats to maintain U.S. support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict, now entering its fourth year with intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Zelenskyy also plans to engage with U.S. energy companies during his visit to address Ukraine’s evolving energy needs in response to changing Russian tactics. Recent attacks by Russian forces on Ukrainian gas production and power facilities have raised concerns about potential energy shortages, prompting Kyiv to consider importing electricity. Conversely, Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian oil refineries, leading to gasoline shortages in the region.
