A couple in Kamloops, British Columbia, utilized 3D printing technology to create a feeding stand for a foster kitten with a unique medical condition. The kitten, named Piglet, was rescued by Angela and Jason Lyall at two days old and struggled with proper feeding due to a suspected case of megaesophagus.
Initially, Piglet’s inability to suckle properly resulted in stunted growth and malnourishment. Despite facing potential euthanasia, further examination revealed the underlying condition affecting her esophagus function. Megaesophagus hinders the normal passage of food, posing risks of regurgitation and potential aspiration into the lungs.
To address Piglet’s feeding challenges, the couple designed a custom vertical feeding stand using a free online template for 3D printing. This innovative solution allowed Piglet to consume food safely, aiding her recovery and growth. Angela emphasized the ongoing care required for Piglet, including five daily feedings and post-meal upright positioning for 15 minutes.
