Bill Van Vugt, an 80-year-old resident of London, recently clinched the +80 title at the 41st Dubya World Vet Motocross Championships held at Glen Helen Raceway in California. Van Vugt’s motocross journey began at the age of 40 and has now culminated in a prestigious championship win.

Motocross seems to be a shared passion within the Van Vugt family, as both his daughter, Jolene, and son, Billy, are accomplished motocross racers. Jolene has also made a name for herself as a skilled stunt actor.

In a recent interview with London Morning host Andrew Brown, Van Vugt discussed his love for motocross and his remarkable achievements on the track. He shared insights into his racing experiences and what motivates him to continue pursuing his passion at his age.

When asked about his recent victory at the championships, Van Vugt expressed gratitude and revealed that the +80 class in motocross was introduced about five years ago at Glenn Helen, California, where he competed against four other riders. He described the competitive nature of the races, with events held over multiple days where participants strive for the fastest finish.

Reflecting on his motocross journey, Van Vugt recalled how he initially got into the sport when his son showed an interest at a young age. Over the years, he honed his skills and even made history by becoming the first Canadian to win the Loretta Lynn amateur event in Tennessee in the +50 class.

Despite the physical demands of motocross, Van Vugt emphasized the importance of staying in good shape to compete effectively. He shared that while injuries are a common occurrence in the sport, he remains committed to staying active and continuing his racing endeavors.

Van Vugt also highlighted the availability of motocross tracks in the London area, mentioning popular venues like GoreRd Motocross and The Pit in Thamesford. He acknowledged the cost associated with competitive motocross but noted that it remains a popular activity for enthusiasts of all ages.

When asked about his future plans in motocross, Van Vugt maintained a day-by-day approach, acknowledging the uncertainty of what the future holds. Despite the surprises his age-defying passion may elicit from others, he remains dedicated to the thrill of motocross racing.
