The Czech Republic clinched their first victory in Group A by defeating Finland 2-0 in the Olympic women’s ice hockey tournament, while Sweden secured a spot in the quarter-finals with a 4-0 triumph over France in Group B at Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.
Both Finland and the Czech Republic encountered challenges at the start of the 2026 Olympic Games. The Czech team suffered a 5-1 defeat in their opener against the U.S., followed by a 4-3 shootout loss to Switzerland. On the other hand, Finland’s initial match was postponed due to four players testing positive for norovirus. They later faced a 5-0 loss to the U.S.
In the game against Finland, the Czech Republic took the lead early in the third minute when Tereza Pištěková scored after intercepting the puck in the neutral zone. Despite facing penalties, Finland failed to capitalize, allowing Natálie Mlýnková to extend the Czechs’ lead with a goal before the end of the first period.
The U.S. currently leads Group A with six points, followed by the Czech Republic in second with four points. Defending champions Canada hold three points, while Switzerland has two points. Finland is yet to secure a point, but all teams in the group will advance to the quarter-finals based on their preliminary round performances.
In Group B, Sweden dominated with a perfect record of nine points after defeating France 4-0. Germany, Japan, and Italy each have three points after two games, while France remains at the bottom without a point after three losses. The top three teams in the group will progress to the quarter-finals.
Sweden’s performance has been impressive, outscoring opponents 14-1 and aiming for their first medal since 2006. The team, led by coach Ulf Lundberg, has displayed a confident and determined attitude, with a roster featuring young talents eager to compete for Olympic glory.
