Canada’s military police have pressed charges against a high-ranking officer after looking into discrepancies concerning pay and perks. Col. James Smith, the current head of Task Force Latvia, is facing a charge of misconduct under the National Defence Act. The accusations surfaced in May 2025 and seem to be linked to benefits provided by the Canadian Armed Forces.
A statement from the Canadian Forces Provost Marshal disclosed that Smith was in charge during the inquiry. When questioned about Smith’s status, the Department of National Defence confirmed that he is still leading but noted that the commander of Canadian Joint Operations Command is evaluating potential actions following the charge.
In certain instances, the military has requested commanding officers to step down temporarily while investigations take place and legal processes unfold. The statement did not elaborate on the specifics of Smith’s alleged actions.
Brig-Gen. Vanessa Hanrahan, the provost marshal, mentioned that if the charge progresses to a full trial, Smith will face proceedings within the military justice system. Hanrahan acknowledged the full cooperation of the military’s operations command and Task Force Latvia members during the investigation.
Smith, a veteran army member who has held various senior roles, including director of the Land Warfare Centre, has been with the military for a considerable period.
