In the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games, a historic event will take place as Olympic speed skaters will compete for gold on a temporary indoor rink for the first time. To ensure optimal glide and minimal friction, ice master Mark Messer, renowned for his work on the Olympic Oval in Calgary, has been meticulously crafting the speed skating ice at the new Speed Skating Stadium in Rho, just north of Milan.

Messer, with his extensive experience in ice preparation, described the current project as one of his most challenging endeavors. The unique demands of speed skating ice require it to be exceptionally hard, cold, and clean to facilitate maximum speed and performance for the skaters.

The process of creating the ideal ice surface involves precise steps, starting with setting up insulation and a network of pipes carrying glycol to maintain the ice at the optimal temperature. Layers of water are carefully applied, painted white, and striped to delineate lanes. Maintaining a dirt-free surface is crucial to prevent any interference with the skaters’ movements.

Enrico Fabris, a former Olympic gold medalist turned deputy sports manager at the speed skating venue, emphasized the importance of consistent and fast ice conditions for all competitors. The meticulous ice-making process aims to provide skaters with a smooth and efficient surface for their performances.

The critical role of the Zamboni ice resurfacing machine in track maintenance cannot be understated, as it ensures a clean and smooth surface for the skaters. Challenges such as controlling water freezing rates and achieving the right ice thickness without disturbing the underlying infrastructure add complexity to the ice-making process.

Following a successful test event, adjustments and fine-tuning are ongoing to optimize air temperature, humidity, and ice conditions for the upcoming competitions. The final preparations aim to create an environment where all skaters have equal and favorable conditions to showcase their skills on the meticulously crafted speed skating ice.
