Actor James Van Der Beek, famous for his role in the 1990s TV series “Dawson’s Creek,” has passed away at the age of 48. His publicist confirmed his death in an email to CBC News. Van Der Beek revealed in November 2024 that he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer and had been sharing his cancer journey and family life on Instagram since then.

A statement posted on the actor’s official Instagram page announced his passing earlier on the same day, highlighting his bravery, faith, and grace during his final days. The family’s statement shared on Instagram requested privacy as they mourned the loss of their beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend.

Initially gaining fame from “Dawson’s Creek,” where he portrayed Dawson Leery, a teenager with aspirations of becoming a successful director, Van Der Beek also appeared in movies like “Varsity Blues” and TV series such as “CSI: Cyber.” The show, known for its articulate dialogue and discussions on relationships and life, featured a group of high school friends navigating love, friendship, and personal growth.

“Dawson’s Creek” catapulted Van Der Beek, along with co-stars Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, and Michelle Williams, to stardom. Despite being strongly associated with his role in the show, Van Der Beek embraced self-parody in various comedic projects, acknowledging the challenge of moving on from such an iconic series.

Beyond his “Dawson’s Creek” days, Van Der Beek ventured into diverse roles, including co-creating a character in a mockumentary and participating in reality shows like “Dancing with the Stars.” He maintained a self-deprecating attitude towards his career, believing that humor and humility garnered respect from audiences.

His journey in entertainment extended to television appearances in different series and roles in movies like “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “The Rules of Attraction.” In 2025, he was revealed as a contestant on “The Masked Singer,” showcasing his musical talents.

Originally a theatre enthusiast from Cheshire, Conn., Van Der Beek transitioned into acting at a young age, eventually landing iconic roles on screen. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.
