The union representing Air Canada pilots has expressed concerns over what they describe as a “retaliatory and anti-labour” move by Scandinavian Airlines, where Air Canada’s incoming CEO currently serves in a leadership role.
Anko van der Werff is set to transition from his position as president and CEO of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) to assume the same role at Air Canada by the end of January. The recent dismissal of Scandinavian Airlines Captain Mattias Åman Thiel, who also chairs the SAS section of the Swedish Pilots’ Association, has raised eyebrows.
While the airline confirmed Thiel’s termination to Radio-Canada, no specific reason was disclosed for the decision. In response, the union and the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations, representing over 160,000 pilots globally, have called for Thiel’s reinstatement.
ALPA Canada’s president, representing pilots across major and regional Canadian airlines, criticized the dismissal as “unwarranted” in a letter addressed to van der Werff. The president emphasized the importance of fair treatment of employees, signaling a potential impact on the incoming CEO’s relationship with Air Canada pilots.
The dispute has escalated with demands for Thiel’s immediate reinstatement, backed by various unions and pilot associations. The Swedish Airline Pilots Association (SWEALPA) chair, Tristan Okkonen, expressed shock over the dismissal and highlighted ongoing legal challenges to contest the decision.
Thiel’s firing allegedly stemmed from accusations of improper travel amidst union responsibilities, which the pilots’ union refutes with evidence of remote work engagement. The legal battle continues as the pilots’ union seeks redress and reinstatement for Thiel, amid concerns over strained labor relations and the need for trust between management and employees.
Air Canada declined to comment on the situation involving Scandinavian Airlines, while SAS defended its decision, emphasizing adherence to labor principles and uniform treatment of employees regardless of their roles or relationships within the organization.
