Canada’s male tennis players faced a challenging start at the 2026 Australian Open. The struggles began with Gabriel Diallo and Liam Draxl losing their initial singles matches. Subsequently, Felix Auger-Aliassime, the seventh seed, won the first set against Nuno Borges but eventually succumbed to cramps, retiring in the fourth set with the score tied. Auger-Aliassime expressed difficulty in maintaining competitive performance due to the cramps.

Denis Shapovalov, on the other hand, advanced to the second round by defeating Bu Yunchaokete in straight sets. Shapovalov’s impressive performance included 19 aces and a solid conversion rate of break points. He will face Marin Cilic in the upcoming round.

In the women’s singles, Canadian player Victoria Mboko secured a swift victory over Emerson Jones, winning in straight sets. She displayed a strong service game with high first-serve and second-serve point percentages. Mboko is set to play against Caty McNally in the next round.

Unfortunately, Marina Stakusic faced physical struggles during her match against Priscilla Hon, ultimately retiring due to severe cramps. Despite a promising start, Stakusic had to withdraw from the match, leaving Hon to advance.

In another notable match, seventh seed Jasmine Paolini showcased a dominant performance by defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets. The victory highlighted the opening day of the tournament, setting a positive tone for Paolini.

Additionally, the Canadian team is scheduled to face Kazakhstan in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers in April. The winning team will proceed to the finals in Shenzhen, China, later in the year. Canada has a history of success in women’s team tournaments, having secured victories in previous competitions.

In other matches, top-ranked players like Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams made significant appearances at the Australian Open. Djokovic marked his 100th win at Melbourne Park, aiming to add more titles to his impressive career record. Meanwhile, Williams, despite a loss, set a record as the oldest woman to compete in the Australian Open singles main draw.

The tournament continues with exciting matchups and promising performances from talented players across the globe.
