“NASA’s New Moon Rocket Delayed Due to Helium Glitch”

NASA faced another setback with its new moon rocket, likely delaying astronauts’ first lunar journey in decades until spring. The space agency disclosed the issue just after setting March 6 for the Artemis II mission, mankind’s initial moon flight in over 50 years. The problem arose from a disruption in the helium flow to the rocket’s upper stage, crucial for engine purging and fuel tank pressurization.

Unlike the hydrogen fuel leaks encountered earlier this month during a countdown rehearsal of the Space Launch System rocket, this helium glitch is a separate concern. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman suggested a faulty filter, valve, or connection plate might be behind the halted helium flow. Resolving the issue would necessitate accessing the area in the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Isaacman mentioned on social media that preparations for rollback would commence, ruling out the March launch and pointing to potential launch windows in early or late April. NASA hinted at relocating the 98-meter rocket to its hangar for repairs, acknowledging the disappointment felt by the team working diligently for the mission’s success.

The Artemis II lunar fly-around had been delayed previously due to hydrogen fuel leaks, prompting a second fuelling test that showed minimal leaks, boosting confidence for a March liftoff target. The four astronauts entered a mandatory two-week quarantine to ensure their health ahead of the mission. The disrupted helium flow issue specifically affects the SLS rocket’s interim cryogenic propulsion stage, crucial for placing the Orion crew capsule in the proper orbit for Earth checkout post-launch.

The Artemis program, aiming for the first moon landing with a crew, has only conducted one crewless lunar-orbiting mission in 2022. Similar to the Apollo program that saw 24 astronaut moon trips from 1968 to 1972, the Artemis program’s crewed moon landing remains a few years away, awaiting resolution of technical challenges.
