The U.S. Secret Service reported that a man in his 20s was fatally shot after breaching security at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday when unauthorized entry into the secure perimeter was made, leading to the shooting by Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputy.
Despite President Trump often spending weekends at the resort, he was not present during the event as he was at the White House, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump. The man’s identity is being kept confidential pending notification of his next of kin. He was seen near the north gate of Mar-a-Lago carrying what seemed to be a shotgun and a fuel can.
Law enforcement engaged with the individual, resulting in shots being fired. Fortunately, no officers from the Secret Service or Sheriff’s Office were harmed in the incident. The FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are conducting an investigation into the man’s background, actions, potential motives, and the use of force.
President Trump has encountered previous threats, including being wounded in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania during a campaign rally in 2024. Another incident involved a man with a rifle near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, leading to a life imprisonment sentence. The recent event adds to a series of political violence instances in the U.S., underscoring the ongoing challenges faced.
The breach at Trump’s Florida residence is reminiscent of a previous assassination attempt during the 2024 election. In that incident, a man aiming a rifle at President Trump was intercepted by a Secret Service agent, leading to the man’s arrest and subsequent life imprisonment. This event followed an earlier assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where Trump narrowly escaped harm.
Efforts to obtain comments from the White House regarding the recent incident have not been immediately successful.
