As athletes gear up for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy, they will be accommodated in six Olympic villages spread across the northern regions of the country. The extensive layout of Milano Cortina 2026, spanning from Milan to the Antholz Valley, presents logistical challenges, particularly in terms of minimizing environmental impact by limiting travel between clusters.
IOC president Kirsty Coventry acknowledged the complexities associated with dispersing the Games across various locations in Italy, despite the sustainable approach of utilizing mostly existing venues. Coventry emphasized the importance of striking a balance between sustainability and providing a memorable experience for fans, National Olympic Committees, and athletes.
A working group established by Coventry is currently evaluating the inclusion of disciplines in the Olympic Games, exploring potential additions or removals, and considering the feasibility of sports transitioning between summer and winter calendars.
The inauguration of the Milano-Cortina Olympics is set for Feb. 6, with different segments of the opening ceremony scheduled across four locations in Italy, including the primary venue at Milan’s San Siro Stadium.
Progress on the Hockey Arena and Sliding Centre
The Milano Santagiulia arena, designated for hosting hockey matches during the Olympics, faces construction delays but is expected to host its first game a day before the opening ceremony. IOC’s Olympic Games executive director, Christophe Dubi, confirmed ongoing efforts to finalize the arena, ensuring readiness for the competition.
Concurrently, work continues on the new sliding centre in Cortina d’Ampezzo, following previous setbacks due to sabotage. Dubi expressed optimism regarding the progress, highlighting that essential elements such as track infrastructure and technical systems are in place.
Despite the challenges posed by construction timelines, both venues are on track for completion, with efforts intensified to provide optimal facilities for athletes and spectators.
Upcoming Meetings and Future Plans
Coventry is anticipated to engage with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance during the Milano-Cortina Olympics, as discussions with the U.S. administration regarding the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles are pending. While interactions with the organizing committee for the L.A. 2028 Games have commenced, formal communication with the White House is yet to take place.
Coventry emphasized the importance of effective communication in navigating potential challenges and ensuring successful collaboration leading up to future Olympic events. The IOC remains vigilant about geopolitical developments but refrains from intervening in political matters, focusing on facilitating global participation in the Games.
