The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has exonerated a Peel Regional Police officer following the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man wielding a knife in a Mississauga residence last year. SIU Director Joseph Martino stated that no criminal charges would be pursued in this instance, officially closing the case.
According to the SIU’s report released on Wednesday, the incident occurred on December 11, 2025, at a home near Britannia Road and Winston Churchill Boulevard. The investigation revealed that the young man had attacked a family member in the basement with a knife before fleeing to a neighbor’s house to seek help.
Upon police arrival and establishing a perimeter, a family member informed officers about the man’s deteriorating mental health and non-compliance with medication, mentioning previous suicidal behavior. Bodycam footage was analyzed during the inquiry, as the SIU investigates incidents involving police that result in serious harm, death, allegations of assault, or firearm discharge.
Police entered the residence and found the man barricaded in a basement bathroom. After attempting to coax him out, officers breached the door with a sledgehammer. Upon entry, they encountered the man lying in the shower with a knife. Despite commands to show his hands, the man remained unresponsive.
Subsequently, an officer discharged a Taser at the man, who then rose with the knife and lunged at another officer. Following a series of Taser and firearm discharges, the man was subdued, sustaining fatal injuries. Despite the circumstances, Martino deemed the officer’s actions justifiable given the perceived threat posed by the man, although the final shots fired were under scrutiny.
The man was pronounced deceased at the hospital following life-saving efforts by police and paramedics. Martino emphasized the perceived threat to the officer’s life and the ongoing danger posed by the man even after being shot multiple times.
