Bank of Montreal CEO Darryl White has raised concerns over the security of personal banking information when entrusted to artificial intelligence agents. Speaking at the Toronto Global Forum, White highlighted the rapid advancement of AI technology outpacing regulatory safeguards. These comments come following a similar sentiment expressed by RBC’s CEO about potentially restricting Meta’s Muse AI agent from accessing client data.

White emphasized the need for public caution, noting that individuals have become too comfortable sharing personal information with various agents in the digital landscape. He advised against disclosing sensitive details such as banking credentials, credit card information, social insurance numbers, and PINs, as they lack adequate protection.

Canada’s major banks have heavily invested in AI technology in recent years. White mentioned that BMO’s insurance division is utilizing AI to expedite underwriting decisions, reducing the process from 28 days to just 10 seconds. The shift towards AI integration in financial services has been significant, with various institutions exploring its potential benefits.

While AI agents like Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s ChatGPT offer convenience by monitoring financial activities and providing spending advice with client consent, there are growing concerns about data privacy and security. RBC’s CEO McKay mentioned the possibility of limiting Muse’s access to client information to maintain a balance between consumer needs and system safety.

This cautious approach towards AI integration echoes sentiments from other financial institutions like JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Charles Schwab, who have opted to restrict external AI agents from accessing client data. As the financial industry navigates the evolving landscape of AI technology, ensuring data protection and privacy remains a key priority for banking institutions.
