Eddie Jordan’s brave final appearance as F1 legend kept working weeks before death

Beloved Formula 1 legend Eddie Jordan was still working just weeks before his death. The Irish businessman and former team owner’s death was confirmed on Thursday in a statement released by his family.

Jordan, who was 76 years old, rose to fame as the owner of the Jordan Grand Prix team which began racing in 1991 and was later sold in 2005. He then went on to launch a successful punditry career including a spell with BBC Sport and he remained involved in F1 in recent years.

He was still working in the weeks leading up to his death and contributing to the Formula For Success podcast which he co-founded with his friend and former F1 driver David Coulthard. The latter has continued to post episodes himself but Jordan’s last appearance came three weeks ago.

Posted on February 20, the episode features the Irishman interviewing former Alpine F1 team principal Otmar Szafnauer who was a guest star. He heartbreakingly spoke of how he planned to travel back to Europe later this year if he felt well enough to do so.

Jordan said: “So let us in this new year, when DC comes back of from being dry, and you’ve done your two months, I’m hoping to make a recovery to be mid-season, maybe Monaco, back in full flight.

“Hopefully things will work to my favour and we can head down to the TipTop and have a very nice pleasant cool beer, after racing some evening, hanging over the guard rail. They’re special moments for me, because you can’t buy them and you’re just talking about rubbish and nothing at all. I enjoy that time.”

Formula 1 fans can watch every practice, qualifying and race live with Sky’s new Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle in a new deal that saves £192.

As well as Sky Sports access, this includes more than 100 TV channels and free subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+.

Jordan announced last December, on another episode of the podcast, that he had spent much of 2024 battling cancer. He said: “Way back in March and April, I was diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer. And then it spread into the spine and the pelvis, so it was quite aggressive.”

On Thursday, his family announced that he had succumbed to the illness. A statement read: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE, the ex-Formula 1 team owner, TV pundit and entrepreneur.

“He passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town in the early hours of March 20, 2025, at the age of 76, after battling with an aggressive form of prostate cancer for the past 12 months.

“EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence. He will be missed by so many people, but he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow.”
