One lucky saver who held just £100 in Premium Bonds has won £1million in the March 2025 draw.
The winner lives in Cleveland and their winning bond number 540HZ735699 was bought in May 2023. The second £1million prize went to someone living in Cumbria, who held £35,000 in Premium Bonds and purchased their winning bond 408VD714629 in August 2020.
The maximum you can have saved in Premium Bonds is £50,000. Premium Bonds are a savings product run by National Savings & Investment (NS&I) where you are entered into a monthly prize draw, rather than earning a guaranteed level of interest.

The prizes start at £25 and go up to £1million – but some months, you may not win anything at all. You get a unique bond number for every £1 invested. The odds of a bond winning each month are 22,000 to 1 for every £1 bond – but most prizes are for smaller amounts.
For example, there were 1,819,687 prizes worth £25 each given out in March 2025, in comparison to 83 prizes worth £100,000 and just two £1million prizes. There were 129,015,731,952 bond numbers eligible for the draw. A total of 5,902,600 prizes worth £432,857,175 will be paid out in March.
The prize fund rate – which is described as the the nearest thing Premium Bonds has to an interest rate – is currently 4%, but this is due to be reduced to 3.80% from the April 2025 draw. The odds of winning a prize from the April 2025 draw will remain at 22,000 to 1.
You can use the NS&I online prize checker tool, or the Premium Bonds prize checker app, to see if you’ve won. If you’re a winner, you can have the money paid into their bank account, or reinvest it into new Premium Bonds. You should be emailed or sent a text message from NS&I if you’ve won. There are currently 2,516,285 unclaimed Premium Bonds prizes worth £93,830,100 waiting to be claimed.
Andrew Westhead, NS&I Retail Director, said: “Spring is definitely in the air for our two jackpot winners from Cleveland and Cumbria this month. The Cleveland winner’s story is particularly exciting, with just £100 invested in Premium Bonds in 2023. It just shows that every £1 Bond has an equal chance of winning the £1 million jackpot.
“This is the second smallest holding ever to win the £1 million jackpot. The smallest holding ever to win was £17 back in July 2004 with the winning Bond purchased in 1959. It’s not just about the £1 million jackpots though. Thanks to ERNIE we’ve drawn 5.9 million prizes worth over £430 million this month.”
