Lloyds, Halifax, and Nationwide went down today with customers locked out of online banking

Major banks, including Lloyds Bank Halifax, First Direct, and Nationwide, saw major issues with their online banking apps today, with thousands of customers unable to access their online accounts.

The banks impacted this morning also included Bank of Scotland and TSB, with all groups experiencing issues with their online and mobile apps. The majority of customers reported having issues accessing their mobile and online banking, and some also had issues making payments.

First Direct – which is owned by HSBC – confirmed it had experienced a technical fault this morning. However, soon after, the glitch was fixed, and all services were working normally. Lloyds Banking Group – which includes Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and the Bank of Scotland – has also confirmed that the earlier issues have been sorted.

Nationwide and TSB have both now confirmed that the issues have been fixed, with Nationwide posting the update on X and TSB later releasing a statement. The Nationwide post read: “Sorry if you experienced delays making a payment today. Everything is now working normally.”

A TSB spokesperson told the Mirror: “We apologise for the issues that some customers experienced logging into our mobile app and online banking earlier today. Service has now resumed, but if any customers experience further issues then please get in touch.”

The problems first started at around 7:30 this morning with 800 Nationwide customers logging issues on Downdetector, which monitors the status of online services. TSB had over 800, First Direct had 400, the Bank of Scotland had over 500, while Halifax had 3,400 reports and Lloyds Bank had 4,200.

Lloyds Banking Group earlier confirmed it was aware of the issue affecting Halifax, Lloyds and the Bank of Scotland in response to a customer query on X – formerly Twitter. The Post read: “We know some of our customers are having issues logging on to internet banking and our app. We’re sorry for this, and we’re working to get everything back to normal.”

At the time, First Direct also acknowledged it posting: “We understand some customers are having issues making payments right now. We’re really sorry and are investigating as a matter of urgency. We will share an update as soon as possible.”

The issue hit people once again on the final day of the month – which is payday for many Brits. One Lloyds banking customer wrote: “I need to pay my credit card today payments are due 1st of each month I can’t do it as can’t log into my online banking account! What is going on? 1st Barclays has a national outage now this?”

Another customer said they needed to make some “urgent payments” and Lloyds needed to sort the problem out soon. A TSB customer shared: “Oh, what’s that…. payday and @TSB is DOWN AGAIN!!!!!?! Absolute shambles this bank like.” A fellow Halifax customer added: “@HalifaxBank can’t log in. Seems a lot affected by searching X. What’s the latest? I need to get onto my bank urgently.” A fourth customer said: “Whats going on please – it’s payday and I cannot send my regular payments. This is going to be problematic for me.”

Customers fumed online as the outages had hit multiple major banks, with many asking why the issue continued to occur each payday. One person said: “It’s that thing called Technology again, todays victims are, Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, and TSB. happy online bankers.”

Another added, “I saw this tweet and just checked myself because my Halifax and Bank of Scotland are also inaccessible, and sure enough, TSB too! What’s going on with the banks?!” A third said, “If you look on down detector, it looks like several UK Banks are having payment issues—a little worrying if you ask me!” The Mirror has approached all banks for comment.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson, told the Mirror: “We know some customers are having issues with internet banking and our apps. We’re sorry about this and we’re working to have it back to normal soon.”
