A new movie from Science North tells Sudbury’s regreening story

A new movie from Science North is telling the story of Sudbury’s regreening efforts.

The popular science centre in Sudbury, is premiering Planting Hope: A Regreening Story on Thursday, and starting Friday, visitors to Scienc North’s sister site, Dynamic Earth, will be able to watch the film as part of their general admission.

The film tells the story of the environmental damage the mining industry caused in Sudbury, and how academics, Indigenous groups, the community at large and the mining companies worked together to remediate the landscape.

“We really tell the story in its entirety,” said Science North CEO Ashley Larose.

“We’re very transparent about practices that really put our environment in jeopardy. And then how communities came together to really assess the problem, how industry and Indigenous communities and community members really came together to say, ‘Listen, this has happened and we need to do something about it.'”

Larose said the Science North film production team first started work on planning the documentary seven years ago.

It will be available in English, French and Anishinaabemowin, which is a first for Science North.

Larose said it was important to have a version of the film told in the Indigenous language.

“One of the perspectives in this film is really celebrating the Indigenous impacts and contributions toward the regreening and how Indigenous communities played a role hand-in-hand with industry and with the greater community,” she said.
