ChatGPT is once again dominating the internet, this time with a new trend blowing up on TikTok and Instagram: the AI Barbie Box Challenge. If you’ve ever imagined yourself as a doll, now’s the time to reinvent yourself and see what a miniature version of you might look like.
In this trend, people are turning themselves into action figures styled like Barbie dolls. Once your personal action figure is generated, it’s placed into a little plastic box so realistic, it looks like something you could actually buy in a store.
Even celebrities are joining in on the fun — like popular pastor Michael Todd, who showed his two million Instagram followers how accurate the AI-generated version of him was. Politicians such as Donald Trump, Liz Truss, and Keir Starmer have also been animated into the dolls.
Social media has been loving the trend. One user wrote: “Can we talk about how CUTE these action figures are?! I mean… is this not giving main character energy? Apparently, ChatGPT is here to feed my delusion. I didn’t know I needed a mini version of myself until now!”
Another wrote: “Ahhh right!! Never one to become a laggard in this new AI era — loving these ChatGPT image prompts.” Of course I had to jump on this AI trend — because seeing myself as a mini photographer doll? ICONIC. This ChatGPT trend has taken over my feed, and honestly… I’m obsessed,” another commented.
This isn’t the only viral AI trend coming out of ChatGPT. Just last month, the platform was trending for generating images in different animation styles. One of the most popular was the Studio Ghibli style, inspired by the renowned Japanese animation studio co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki .
Ironically, Miyazaki has expressed strong disapproval of AI-generated art. In a resurfaced 2016 clip, the legendary animator reacts to a presentation on AI in animation by saying: “I am utterly disgusted. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all.”
Looking at an AI-generated image of a zombie-like creature crawling on the ground, he added: “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.” His words are a powerful condemnation of artificial creativity, as it contrasts with the current excitement surrounding AI art.
