SIU to probe woman’s death while in custody of Hamilton police

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a 31-year-old woman who died in hospital after she was taken into custody by Hamilton police.

In a news release, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said officers arrested the woman on Monday in relation to “multiple failure to comply offences.”

The SIU said the woman was taken to the station and put in a cell. Around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday she was observed in medical distress and emergency services were called. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case, according to the release.

The SIU said a post-mortem has been scheduled for Wednesday.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm or allegations of sexual assault.
