Major winter storm again on the horizon for Quebec

Quebecers should keep their snow shovels close and their winter boots closer. A big snowstorm is expected to sweep the province starting Sunday morning — just days after Thursday’s storm blanketed the region in snow.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning for all of southern and central Quebec. The warning is also in effect in the upper Mauricie and Saguenay—Lac Saint-Jean areas, the Gaspé Peninsula and the North Shore east of Quebec City.

A low pressure system will track toward Quebec and intensify quickly, the national weather agency said.

Environment Canada recommends postponing any non-essential travel plans due to rapidly accumulating snow and low visibility.

Expected snowfall amounts range between 25 to 40 centimetres in Montreal and Quebec City, while the Eastern Townships and Gaspé Peninsula could receive up to 50 centimetres of snow.

The City of Montreal launched a special snow clearing operation Friday following Thursday’s storm, which dumped just over 30 centimetres of snow on the city.

Crews completed seven per cent of operations by 2 p.m. Saturday, said city spokesperson Philippe Sabourin.

Environment Canada has also issued an extreme cold warning for the Chibougamau area, where wind chill values could make the temperature feel like – 38 C.
